Will Sessions are a group from Detroit, Michigan who’s oeuvre runs the gamut between funk, hip hop, soul, jazz/fusion, boogie/disco and soundtrack music. Originally a solo project of bandleader Sam Beaubien, the band evolved from a rhythm section to a larger ensemble including percussion and a horn section.
In 2009, the band released the first of many singles with Detroit-based FNR records, a label sprung out of the legendary Motor City Funk Night parties. The 45s became instant collector items, with some currently fetching large sums amongst rare funk circles.
In 2010, the band dropped their Kindred LP, a tribute to the pioneers of jazz-fusion. Two concerts followed, utilizing the keyboard talents of Detroit funk impresario, Joseph “Amp" Fiddler and drawing material from Kindred influences such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Weather Report in addition to original material from record. In 2011, the band appeared with legendary Motown Funk Brother Dennis Coffey at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. This led to joining him on tour in support of his 2011 self-titled album, which culminated in an appearance on one of the main stages at the Bonnaroo Festival later that year
In 2012, the group collaborated with Detroit rapper and Slum Village alumni Elzhi on Elmatic - a homage to Nas’s classic album Illmatic, with the group providing note for note versions of the original instrumentals. It was lauded as one of the best hip-hop releases of 2013 and an instrumental version of the album was released by the Fat Beats record label.Later in 2012, the band filmed volumes 1 & 2 of their Mixtakes series, a video project which showcased the band playing a ‘live mix’ of hip hop instrumentals by producers such as Black Milk, Jay Dilla, and Madlib – a release of the soundtrack by Fat Beats followed.
In addition to their own work, the group is known for their live and studio collaborations. Members of Will Sessions have collaborated with a long list of artists such as Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, Black Milk, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, Eminem and Slaughter House, KRS-One, Danny Brown, Amp Fiddler, DJ Dez/Andrez, George Clinton, Jeremy Ellis, Wendell Harrison, Kendra Morris, Toots & the Maytals, Griz, Melvin Davis, The Temptations, Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, and The O’Jays. In 2015, the band has plans to release a series of full length albums including a LP of original funk, Mixtakes Volume 3 & 4, and Kindred Live, a collection of live recordings taken from the Kindred concerts.
